As English has become a global or international lingua franca, it is spoken by people from different countries around the world; therefore, it is only to be expected that there will be varieties of English used in different global contexts by people from different countries. This course then introduces students to the use of English in a global context, where English is spoken by different people from different countries in different contexts. It allows students to briefly understand the spread of English from historical perspectives as well as from a world/global view. It also informs students why English has become a global language and what its implications for the use of English at a global level. Besides that, this course exposes students to varieties of English around the world in the Inner, Outer, and Expanding Circles by considering some examples and study cases in each circle's countries, including that of Indonesia. They also will understand the use of English as an international lingua franca where people from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds come together in an international setting. As such it is hoped that they will learn how to be tolerant towards people coming from different countries, using their own distinctive English varieties , different from theirs.
